Take a ferry to Alcatraz Island where you can enjoy audio-guided tours, current exhibits, and more. The small island was developed with many different facilities and is maybe the most famous island in the U.S. The facilities include a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison and a federal prison. It is the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area due to its fame. It was recognized and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. For those truly passionate about Alcatraz history, there is a special Behind the Scenes tour.
